Auckland District Health Board (Te Toka Tumai) is home to an internationally respected group of specialist cardiovascular services unique to Australasia. Together the Cardiovascular Directorate at ADHB provides the largest amount of complex surgeries and specialist cardiac and vascular services across New Zealand. These specialties include cardiovascular surgery, interventional cardiology, vascular surgery and specialist cardiovascular intensive care including a national ECMO service.

Below is a brief summary of the specialty departments you can choose to express your interest in. You may have experience already in one area but want to grow your skills in another, and that is something we are glad to try and support! Once you have reviewed the options you can indicate in your application the specialties you would like to be considered for (our online application questions will guide you). Our nursing team will review your application and may even suggest additional areas you could consider when we respond to you.


Cardiology Nursing (Ward 31) - We offer an environment of patient centred care to national and local populations. We support this with a commitment to staff development of skills and knowledge that also includes rotational working within the cardiac care unit.


Cardiothoracic and Vascular Intensive Care Unit (CVICU) - CVICU leads New Zealand in providing specialised nursing care based on clinical skill, research, education and innovation. We are the only adult ICU to specialize in heart and lung transplant and extracorpeal membrane oxygenation providing learning opportunities you can’t get anywhere else in New Zealand. Our commitment is to the highest levels of clinical quality and providing the best standards of personalised care possible to our patients. This is a 24 hour service covering both elective and acute admissions, providing our patients with intensive care for a range of procedures. With excellent professional development opportunities, and on-going education along with the opportunity to apply for subsidised relevant postgraduate education, these roles would suit experienced Registered Nurses who thrive in an acute hospital setting. To be considered for this position you have at least 2 years’ experience in an ICU/HDU, acute surgical, acute medical or cardiac area - and be eligible for registration with the New Zealand Nursing Council.


Vascular Services (Ward 41) -An opportunity to develop your acute surgical and interventional skills and be a part of the only purely vascular service in Australasia! In this exciting specialty you will be able to develop your acute surgical and assessment skills. You will be a member of a multidisciplinary, professional team committed to delivering quality care to Auckland’s vascular patients. We will offer an environment supporting professional development and further education and are particularly interested in expanding our team with registered nurses experienced from a surgical, medical or cardiac background.


Coronary Care Unit - Offers exciting challenges within a critical care environment practicing the latest in Nursing and Medical research/ evidenced-based care. We are an innovative team of professionals who will provide you with full orientation and on-going support to help you succeed in achieving your own professional goals. We are inviting applications from passionate registered nurses with a desire to deliver top quality patient care. You will be a Registered Nurse with a minimum of one year experience in a New Zealand hospital (recent Acute General Medical or Surgical experience is advantageous).We provide comprehensive orientation and on-going support to all our new team members.


Cardiac Investigations unit - Be part of a vibrant multidisciplinary team. This unit is an acute care department specialising in a wide range of diagnostic and interventional procedures of varying complexities while caring for patients acutely and on a non-acute basis.


Cardiothoracic Surgical Unit (Ward 42) - Opportunity to gain cardiothoracic experience! Join our dedicated team of nurses in a stimulating and fast paced environment. You will be caring for patients undergoing cardiothoracic surgery who have complex needs in an acute and challenging clinical setting. You will be a part of a supportive team working towards your continuing professional development and ideally, you will have previous cardiothoracic experience or recent surgical experience in an acute hospital setting.
